Chitika and Unsupported Countries

April 23rd, 2008

We are making a small change for people who are viewing Chitika ads from unsupported countries. If you live in one of the following supported countries THIS WILL NOT AFFECT YOU, so feel free to stop reading anytime now (go outside, or play some video games, enjoy life!):

The supported countries are: USA, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain, Sweden, UK

However if you DO NOT live in a country listed above, then you will notice a change in some of your Chitika ad units.

To reduce stress on our servers and infrastructure, if you are viewing Chitika ads from a country that is NOT on the list above, you will now see a default ad or PSA.

IMPORTANT: THIS WILL NOT AFFECT YOUR REVENUE AT ALL! Since we do not pay for clicks from unsupported countries, this will have ZERO impact on your revenue - it will only change the way Chitika ads appear to people viewing from unsupported countries.

This change will allow our servers to run a lot smoother and faster, which will make for a better experience for all of your users. Another very positive note: Over the coming weeks, we will be focusing on securing advertisers to fill these spots, and earn you revenue for traffic that we could not monetize before. Stay tuned! :)

**UPDATE**: I should have posted this originally (sorry for the oversight!) - but here is a VERY easy way for you to show an alternate ad (or graphic, or whatever you want) to traffic coming from unsupported countries. Just add this line into your Chitika code:

ch_alternate_ad_url = “INSERT YOUR URL HERE”;

You can read more about using this variable here.

    Ok, I am from unsupported country.
    So as publisher, what advertisement I will see on my blog?
    I don’t want too see some “the Baptist World Alliance” or “Secrets About Pharmacy”
    It is completely irrelative.
    How will I know what my visitors see?
    Thanks

  2. Ryan Says:

    Almakos -

    You will most likely see an eMiniMall with an Apple iPod in it - that is our “house ad”.

    However - as I mentioned above, we are trying to secure advertisers from unsupported countries so that we can actually make money for you in those spots, so you may see banners that say “Advertise on This Site” or “Advertise with Chitika”.

    It’s a null for me… in Philippines

  4. Melvin Says:

    waaaah…

  5. Richard Says:

    Would there be a possibility of us controlling what we display in the defaults or having an option to display a blank transparent iframe?

  6. Almakos Says:

    ok I am seeing ipod
    but why color scheme is messed up(default white)?
    look at my blog it is even worse than baptists :((((
    can you fix color scheme please?

  7. Ryan Says:

    @Richard -

    Definitely! You can do that right now by adding this variable into your Chitika code:

    ch_alternate_ad_url = “your_URL”;

  8. Josh Tam Says:

    I am also seeing ipod, and it’s all white, but I am guessing that to load color settings, it will still take server load, that is why everything is default, but it would be nice to show ipod but with the configured color settings…

  9. Wisnu Alamsyah Says:

    I think Chitika should have Backup Ads system like ADSDAQ. When Chitika ads not showing it’ll show backup ads. My MPU and Related Products is not showing now. It’s only show white background :(

  10. Irawan Says:

    Glad that you say it will not impact to our revenue at all!

  11. wahyu Says:

    I am from unsupported country.
    I am from Indonesia and newbie internet marketer.
    what can I do for Chitika.
    : (

  12. cheikh Says:

    I need more info on how I can use the ch_alternate_ad_url = “your_URL”;

    Do I create an empty page and put there for example my google adsense code? Do I have to make sure that the width/height matches the chitika ad?

  13. Ryan Says:

    @Josh Tam - that’s a great point.. I will ask our engineers if this is possible.

    @Wisnu - I just updated the original post to show you how to add a backup ad of your choice - this should help you out!

    @wahyu - ANYONE can use Chitika regardless of what country you are in. However we only accept clicks from the list of countries above.

    @cheikh - Yes that is exactly what you do - you can put Google there, or anything else you would like. You should make sure that the width/height does match (as long as it is the same size or smaller, it will appear fine).

  14. Erwin Says:

    Dear Ryan… is this new rule for permanent, or is there a chance that will change in the future

  15. moose Says:

    I see some Indian ads, sulekha.com etc….. will I be getting paid for clicks on it

  16. paulr Says:

    Hi
    Would be nice to be able to view how your ads appear in different countries via te chitika website. It seems to default to the u.s only. thanks

  17. prakss Says:

    Well, i am from not listed or unsupported country, so what i have to do….and there is no way and what can i do plz say all that…..

  18. Ryan Says:

    @Erwin - No, this is not permanent. We are very actively looking to secure advertisers who will pay for this traffic.

    @Moose - We are testing those ads in India right now (India is still an unsupported country). When we see how the advertisers/ads do there, we will decide if this is something we want to go forward with and then you can absolutely expect to be paid for them.

    @paulr - I completely agree, and we are working on this. Right now you can see what your keywords do by checking our Preview tool here: http://chitika.com/preview.php

    @prakss - You don’t have to do anything - people who view your site from supported countries will see the ads as you set them up. If you want to show different ads for people who are NOT from supported countries, please look at the update posted at the end of the article.

  19. jessie Says:

    ooooww,

    so, for unsupported country, like me, what will the best to do? :(

  23. Cheikh Says:

    “No, this is not permanent. We are very actively looking to secure advertisers who will pay for this traffic.”

    Do you have an estimate on how close you are to securing advertisers for traffic from unsupported countries?

  24. Rina Says:

    I was using Chitika from one of the unsupported countries. I’d since accepted that viewing ads from one of these countries would result in iPod-only ads.

    But recently, I visited a website with Chitika ads and lo and behold I saw fully-functional (not iPod-only) ads even with rotating MPU ads.

    Apparently Chitika is sidelining PUBLISHERS from unsupported countries not VIEWERS. Because I’m as sure as I can be that I did not view that website from supported countries.

    I’m rather disappointed at this and at the fact that since I’m from unsupported country, there’s no way to know how viewers from supported countries see my ads, if they see anything at all.
