New Ad Unit Being Tested… Are You Interested?
August 20th, 2008
14 comments The magicians engineers are cooking up a cool new Chitika ad unit - the Chitika search unit:

As you can see, your users will have the ability to search your site, or search the web, all without leaving the page (results are displayed inside the unit). We will have 2 separate tabs - 1 for sponsored results (which you get paid for clicks on), and 1 for results from your domain or the web:

This unit is extremely cool for 3 main reasons:
- It is a search box that actually generates revenue for you.
- It keeps your users on your page. Many search boxes display results on a different page, and a high percentage of users don’t end up coming back to your site because of this.
- Many of our publishers have expressed disappointment that we cannot provide Premium ads for all of their traffic (since Premium will only display to search engine traffic). This unit will increase Premium impressions, thus increasing your revenue.
What do you think about this new offering? Is this something that you would use on your site? Are there features missing that you would like to see added? Let us know in the comments below!

This is very nice. Looking forward to testing it.
1) I already have a google search box on my sites. How is this different ?
2) I see a “Powered by Yahoo”. What is that ?
Thanks for adding this option. Its always good to get another option to make money that does not piss off my users.

@MB Chu> 1) I already have a google search box on my sites. How is this different ?
Two main differences:
1) It keeps the users ON YOUR SITE — rather than taking them away to Google. This means that they spend more time on your site AND it keeps the user experience consistent with your site. The problem with sending users to Google is: They go to Google and then get ADD (attention deficit disorder) and then fly away from your site.
2) It is really really easy to setup. Its just like installing a widget. You can be up and running in less than 1 minute.
2) I see a “Powered by Yahoo”. What is that ?
We actually integrated Yahoo BOSS for the search functionality. So this is essentially a mashup of “Yahoo BOSS” and “Chitika | Premium”.

This looks like a great step up from the Google search box for the reasons you have outlined. I would definitely use this on my website

Is there if the future to have just a search box powered by yahoo as a stand alone search like google?
Like the idea, however users would have to click on the search tab.
If it was a stand alone you could use both premiun results and search box, and be able to place the search box in a differant place on your website.

Will it have similar functionality to the Adsense Custom Search feature, so that only relevant topics will be displayed in sponsored results depending on keywords/topics you have chosen?

Rob asked> Will it have similar functionality to the Adsense Custom Search feature, so that only relevant topics will be displayed in sponsored results depending on keywords/topics you have chosen?
Yes. The sponsored results are targeted to the query being typed in (or if the user is coming in from a search engine already — then it is targeted to whatever he just typed in that search engine).

Phil Asked> If it was a stand alone you could use both premiun results and search box, and be able to place the search box in a differant place on your website.
Phil, it is a standalone. If the user comes directly to your website, all he sees is the search tab and can directly search YOUR SITE in it (without going over to Google).

Sure, I’ll test it on my blog first then see how it works for a few other sites.
