Announcing the Winners of the AdSense + Chitika | Premium Placement Contest
December 22nd, 2008
21 commentsLadies and Gentleman - we have your winners!
After carefully reviewing all submissions (blog comments and email) we have chosen one grand prize winner to receive their choice of:
- Google/T-Mobile G1 Android phone
- Blackberry Storm
- Apple iPhone 3G 8Gb
And 2 runners up to receive $200 each!
GRAND PRIZE WINNER: Donald Yeck of www.DoItYourself.com
The forums at DoItYourself.com are 100% text-based - no graphics at all! Since Chitika | Premium shows images next to the ads, it provides a nice visual “flare” for his site (and needless to say - the CTR on these ads is quite high!).
Here is what his users will see who come to his website from a search engine:

And here is what his page looks like when a user comes to his page NOT via search engine:

You can see from these shots that the Chitika | Premium units add a nice variety to his layout, which not only is pleasing to his users, but it also puts additional revenue in his pocket. ;)
The 2 runners up who will receive $200 each are:
www.PurseVillage.com
www.WoodFloorDoctor.com
Congratulations to the 3 winners and thank you to everyone who entered the contest! Subscribe to The Chitika Blog here so that you don’t miss out on your chance to enter & win our next contest.

How was the owner of forums at DoItYourself.com able to remove the border and search tab for the ad?
January 2nd, 2009 at 1:31 pm
Sharabob,
To remove the search tab simply add the following line of code to your Chitika ad unit (anywhere after the line with ch_client but before the line with /script):
ch_nosearch = 1;
About removing the border:
This is a feature that we have been testing out with a few of our users and requires enabling on our end.. some users have requested it to support and in which we have set it up for them. It requires a settings change on our end and then you have to add a line of code to the current code on your page.
We are not sure if/when we will be making this a permanent feature for our users in the code setup. But as soon as it is, we will be announcing it here (on the blog) first.

I don’t like to be critical but doesn’t it seem a little wrong to give the prize to one of the very few publishers who has been allowed to customize the look of their ads?
I really think the ‘do it yourself forums’ would NOT look anywhere near as clean if they we’re forced to use the same format other Chitika publishers are…

@Fresh Niche - I completely see your point here.
However, do know that even if the doityourself.com forum was using the standard version of Chitika | Premium, they still would have won, for the exact reasons that I gave in the post above:
1.) They are a completely text-based site, and the images on Chitika | Premium make it stand out visiually.
2.) The ad is setup so it is the very first thing that users see - A big huge box at the top of their content. Fantastic placement, and it shows with the great CTR that these guys get.
I do appreciate your point, but I want to be very clear that the format of their ads had nothing to do with our team’s decision on the contest winner.
