4 Factors For Success on Your Site - From 50 High-Earning Chitika Publishers
February 27th, 2009
51 commentsThere are tons of different factors that determine how much money you can make from Chitika ads on your website. In fact, all of these factors can be very overwhelming when you are trying to work on improving your earnings!
To help figure out which factors are the MOST important, we looked at 50 high-earning Chitika publishers, and narrowed down the top 4 factors that they all had in common. By improving these 4 factors on your site, you should see a big difference in your advertising revenue [note: this exercise is using Chitika data, but these 4 factors apply to ALL types of advertising (AdSense, TribalFusion, etc.)].
Factor 1: Traffic
Let’s face it - to earn a lot of money, you need to have a lot of traffic. If you don’t have a lot of users coming to your site, then you probably won’t get too many clicks on your ads!
- Suggestions: Take a look at these resources on building up your traffic - Problogger, Copyblogger, Wikihow.
Factor 2: U.S. Traffic
While having a lot of traffic is important, we can go a step further and say that specifically US traffic is ideal. It is well-known in the ad industry that the US market is the most developed and lucrative. Our 50 high-earners all showed more than half of their traffic coming from the US.
- Suggestions: Know where your traffic is coming from! You can usually check this easily on sites like Spyfu.com, or in your Google Analytics (if you aren’t running analytics software yet, you should be!).
Factor 3: U.S. Search Engine Traffic/SEO
Search engine traffic is extremely targeted, and advertisers like this. People coming to your site from search engines are most often the people who click on ads. And specifically to Chitika, our Premium ads will only show to this type of traffic! Again, our group of 50 high-earning Chitika users all had over 45% of their U.S. traffic coming from search engines.
- Suggestions: Work on your SEO to bring more search traffic to your site. Here are some great resources to get started - Problogger SEO article, Hubspot’s Website Grader, SEOChat, SEOBook (and their blog), SEOMoz (also has a great blog), and about a million other sites you can find on Alltop :)
Factor 4: CTR (Click-Through Rate)
This seems obvious, but it is worth looking into a bit deeper. For our group of 50 high-earners, their average CTR was 1.6%, so you should shoot to be in that range or higher if possible.
- Suggestions: To improve CTR, the most important thing is placement - check out this guide for tips. Other items that will boost your CTR are customizing your colors, fonts, etc. You can read how to do that here.
Still feeling overwhelmed? Don’t! Take a deep breath, put on the new Bon Iver album, and start with just one of the factors. You don’t have to do them all at the same time - just focus on one of them and take it from there.

Thanks for the report that you’ve sent in my e-mail, it’s really helpful. :)
My Factor 2 and Factor 4 are really low compared to the top 50 earnings, I guess I should learn more how to boost those with articles that you’ve recommended.
Thanks once again :D

Nice article. Getting the email that compared my stats with the top 50 was nice, this is the first mass email (from any company) that had some details that were nice and useful.

Thank you for your accurate analysis. Very helpful!

I think factor 2 is pretty useless since we can just set the ad server to only show it to US visitors… so that doesn’t really say much….
Showing me my traffic - again - doesn’t say much - what would say more is how that compares to the avg of the top 50….
February 28th, 2009 at 2:53 pm
Matt, didn’t you get an email showing how you traffic compared to the 50 high earners?
All Chitika active publishers who had significant traffic should have got this report.. If you didn’t please drop us a comment here or a feedback or ticket

How about a blog post about how your paid graphic ads are redirecting people to porn sites? I’ve attempted to contact support about this, but your support tab isn’t working.
March 1st, 2009 at 9:26 pm
Thanks for the reports.

I got your mail yesterday , Its grate that I can get such report which will help me to boost my earnings. Here what I observe.
1.) Traffic you show ( its entire traffic or us only, I see second option as us traffic , if that is true then “Traffic” must be entire, then its not correct - or is it all supported countries traffic ? )
2.) US Traffic “%” is not best we need to take care as far as we get traffic.
3.) US Search engine traffic already above avg. but I want to increase it further.
4.) CTR is very low for , I am using one premium box and one graphic ad. , What should I do ??
If anyone out there that can take a look at my site and suggest appropriate location where can i put chitika premium ( currently above post title. )
March 2nd, 2009 at 5:33 am
Report is a good idea, tells me that I am doing it right :)
U.S. Traffic
me: 73.32% avg:53.29%
U.S. Search Engine Traffic/SEO
me:105.34% avg:46.60%
CTR
me:9.05% avg:1.59%
If Chitika ads would pay more than Adsense ads, I would put them on more pages, so the traffic would boost too.
March 2nd, 2009 at 9:53 am
I think the biggest thing missing is traffic comparison. Everything we had was well above average, but there was no way to compare our traffic with others. That would be helpful.
March 2nd, 2009 at 1:06 pm
Wow! Thats a great reviews for my site! Thanks!
March 2nd, 2009 at 7:49 pm
The only problem with Chitika is that the earnings per click are horribly low. I tested Chitika on a site that was earning $900 per month with Adsense and my earnings were about 1/5th of what I had been making. Needless to say I had to get rid of Chitika.

If possible, could you show us the 50 high-earning publishers? Then we have chance to learn more on publishing ads. Or you could give us some detailed examples on styles.
March 3rd, 2009 at 1:35 am
love the tips that was sent to me. but i have problem increasing my traffic :(
March 3rd, 2009 at 9:53 am
@Chase - That would make sense, since Chitika will only show to your search engine traffic (was your search traffic about 1/5 of your total traffic?). You should be using AdSense + Chitika together - that is how the majority of our publishers are running us. Most of our publishers report anywhere from a 20-50% boost in their overall earnings when they add Chitika | Premium with their AdSense.
@Wallpaper - We can’t list those publishers/sites because that would violate our privacy policies. For a list of some publishers who have already spoken out about earning good revenue with us, look here: http://chitika.com/testimonials.php

Guys, this is amazing.
I have never come across any ad service provider to suggest its personnel over how to increase their blog readership in this manner.
I agree that my blog does not get much traffic, but your mail in the inbox had been like something which I had never asked for, but got it any way.
Thanks for sharing this valuable information. 3 cheers to the entire technical staff behind Chitika.

Well placement is really important as well, as I was rearranging my html pages, I moved the chitika ad to the bottom right from top right. Well I have noticed a significant decrease in CTR. I will fixing this issue as soon as I get time.
