Chitika Study: Bing Struggling To Win Even IE Users
August 25th, 2009
13 commentsThe power of bundled software can be an amazing thing – all three major operating systems have a bundled Internet browser, each of which has 73% of their OS’s Internet usage (based on a sample of 163 million US/Canada impressions across the Chitika network in early August). But Bing, the decision engine Microsoft bundles with Internet Explorer, only gets 10.3% of IE users’ searches.

Microsoft has long been known as the king of bundling, with the assumption that bundling creates market share. But now, it seems that crown has moved to Google, the default search engine – and 89.57% of the search market – in Firefox, Safari, and Chrome.

And while Bing has received quite a bit of good reviews, publicity, and advertising, it is still struggling, even with Microsoft Internet Explorer users, falling in at third place on the search rankings behind Google and Yahoo!
Microsoft has a lot of work to do in order to take any significant market share away from Google, but if they use their experience in bundling software, it appears that the opportunity is there to jump up to a majority of users.

It’s pretty hard to take on Google right now because so far they’ve hit all the right notes.
Google, as of today, is actually a word many people use in conversations.
Person 1: What’s that?
Person 2: Google it!

Think ahead of time. Seo for Bing is important. May not seem like it now but will be later on.

Still early days

It’s too early to tell but Bing is surprisingly almost as good a product as Google. The problem for Microsoft is that everyone is still too use to using Google for searching, and everyone is pretty much happy with Google, so there is no desire to change.
Hell, I still use Google to search, lmao.

That’s an excellent point that has been brought up… where was the need Microsoft was trying to fill? People didn’t complain about Google… at least not their search technology. The old adage “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” DOES apply to companies you desperately want to compete with…

I suspect Bings search engine market share will go up as the recession fades since the majority of new computers purchased will have it pre-setup, and many new computer owners simply won’t know what they are missing.

I think Bing is not bad too. Its crawling my website faster than google did. Most probably google is already over congested!!

Very interesting study. I’ve always been partial to Firefox myself, with google search built into the window as my default search. I don’t really like the results Bing puts out. I’m sure it will gain popularity, but it will never top google.

Googles secret has been keep it simple. People just want what they are looking for, no graphics and no extras, just the facts. Google does this well, all other sites are to cluttered.

I get more traffic from stumbleupon.com than from Bing. Go figure.
