The Chitika Blog
WordCamp Boston 2010 #wcbos
Hey y’all it’s Terri from Chitika and I was fortunate enough to go attend WordCamp Boston 2010 this past weekend and I have some great tips to share with you.
First off – WordCamp was awesome. If any of you are WordPress publishers, thinking about doing more with WordPress or even just a web publisher you ought to attend the next one close to you! You can find out more about the WordCamp events at central.wordcamp.org. If you missed WordCamp Boston all the sessions will be on SlideShare and SpeakerRate soon, and do make sure to watch the Ignite videos.
Here are the top five tips I gathered at WordCamp that I thought would be great to share with you Chitika Publishers (and blog readers)
54 Online Publishing Tips
- Post Often and Consistently
If you have a free week don’t post 10 articles or blogs during that week if you typically post only twice a week. Pick a schedule and stick to it to create a habit. If you have time to write more – write something relevant to your website that might not be time sensitive and schedule it to post in the future or save it as a completed draft to post when you are to busy to write for your schedule. - Check your Spelling & Grammar
Most of us are not English teachers – but make your 6th grade English teacher proud by proofreading. I will usually construct a post and run it through the Word or Open Office grammar and spell check then I’ll read it aloud to make sure it makes as much sense aloud as it does on screen. If you struggle with things like word choice and grammar you should definitely read the Elements of Style by William Strunk and E. B. White. There’s a free online version but I highly recommend a copy for your desk to read through at least once – pick one up on Amazon! - Vary Your Posts & Style
Don’t just post text time after time – your regular readers and RSS subscribers would usually love to see different styles of posts. Video posts, audio posts, lists, stories, interviews and add some stock photos to some of your posts too! Your content feels even more fresh when you jazz it up (on top of posting regularly, see also #1). - Full Disclosure is Optional but Recommended
If you are posting reviews for products or services that you may receive affiliate payments from or referral revenue it’s polite to add some text to the page disclosing this information. It’s optional but make sure to check with your legal department or regional government about what kind of disclosure laws are in place to protect bloggers and their readers. For US Publishers: How do bloggers follow the Endorsement Guides?

The 5 publishing tips are well-written! I believe error-free posts are critical because when you make silly mistakes, your reputation can be degraded. I have seen websites teaching English that have posts that contain mistakes! That is a slap in the face.

I’ve only 3 comments to make.
1. Tip 2 is the best ever – I’m amazed how many bad sentences I find when I read my drafts aloud. I also find that it helps to imagine you are speaking to your typical visitor. Difficult at first, but you soon get used to conjuring up your imaginary audience.
2. The trick of attention seeking by promising a different number of tips from the actual number is over-rated :)

@keith haha I see what you did there :) I could have sworn there were five in my head when I wrote it. I’m sure I’ll write a post in the future covering the top two most commonly forgotten tips and only cover that one.

I don’t want to be overly critical, but….
I get the grammar issue – common sense.
Sponsor review non disclosure is so not to be a creeep.
But 1 & 3 are varying posts and timing, why? Item 1 tells me to write on a schedule, why. Google bot indexes (?) more, customers like it? Lucifer spoke in my ear perhaps?

Good post Terri. My experience has been that when I set aside a set day to post on each of my blogs over the course of three months the incremental results are pleasing so I know what you are saying about posting regularly to your blog is “spot on” advice

I never thought about how varying the type of post would better my reader’s experience. After thinking about that for a little while…that does make sense. I am going to add that to my todo list!

Just thought i would comment and say neat design, did you code it yourself? Looks great.

RSS readers provide really nice return-visits to your blog but then RSS users take up less than 10% of the web’s population…

Man oh man – you really opened up my eyes! The Internet has so much information, I get so caught up in so many different directions, it so hard to figure it all out. Thanks again for the post!

Hi I am a customer of Chitika and I am REALLY UPSET with your company.
For 3 days I cannot get support, your corporate office is NOT picking up the phone.
I am getting closer to the point where I will not only not to recommend your company, BUT ADVISE AGAINST USING IT!!!

OK, that what it took to get someone to email me? Good!
Now – I had 3 tickets open and the only one, least relevant to issue was answered.
Can I get TECH help for premium ads NOT FOLDING (hiding?)

TIA

@DavidDT I have escalated your support request and (personally) hand delivered your ticket ID to our lead support specialist who is going to address your ticket ASAP. Sorry about the delay he will be in contact with you shortly.

Thank you very much
I really appreciate that – it is very bad for business to be new customer with highly visible site for high net worth individuals and not to get any support for offering my property for ads placement.
Thank you again.

FoGGeD about it.
