The optimization experts will probably kick in in the morning -- but here is my two cents (Disclaimer: I am an engineering grunt -- not an ad optimization guy)
NJNightSky: 1) I took this page as an example. If you could get the 468x180 ad immediately above the "Posted On" text, that would be better. My fear that the "heat" on the ad (aka heat maps) would increase tremendously if you do that.
2) Dont know if you are open to this: You might want to put a 468x60 (either Yahoo or Chitika would work) above the article on that page.
3) RPU might be a good match for your site. Do send Ryan a note.
Needeless to say: Spend most of your time on the pages that have the most traffic.

gamweb, Two things: 1) Below your content, you should end with an ad. This is because in some cases, the user is looking for the next logical thing to do. You can go with Google or Chitika (depending on what works better in that position).
2) In your targeting, try thinking lateral and see if it works. For example, on your fishing site, GPS receivers and fish finders might make sense.
I sometimes see some great lateral examples of targeting. For example, I saw a site about recipes targeting on "blenders", "cuisinary toaster over" rather than simple queries like "food", "recipe", etc. Think about your audience and what they would actually be interested in.

1&2 are the same so what I do to one would happen to 2 and vice versa. I don't think adding more ads will help my News articles are already surrounded by Chitika on the left and bottom and yahoo on the right. I may relocate like you suggested as soon as I can figure out where to hack the code into the new place. It took me a while to get it where it is now on the bottom of the article.
I PMd Ryan about the RPU.

homeuno, your sites pretty much rock .. I could not come up with much in way of optimization .. besides these small items:
1) On a page like this, you can have the RPU at the bottom (I see that you are already up and running with it)
2) One thing that confused me: Your site is a beautiful site about home decorating. However, right at the top (the first thing people see as the page loads) are 3-4 rotating banners for referral programs of Chitika, Adbrite, TLA, etc. Unless your making major dime on that spot, I would suggest putting those banners at the bottom of the page (or in another location). You can then fill that spot with a meaningful ad or better still: Move your menu up there so that the whole page pushes up (this will get more of your content above the fold).
(I'm off to get beaten up by marketing for suggesting that you move the Chitika referral banner )

Just to add a bit to what EngineeringGrunt said (who gave some great hints...especially for an 'Engineering guy' ); these are just a few general rules of thumb:
1. Death to the banner ad! You can blame the "Shoot the target and win a car!!!" ads for this. Your average reader has literally become blind to the very tip-top of the page due to the proliferation of banner ads.
The left side of the page is also a blind spot for psychological reasons (bear with me; I'm a bit of a dork). When you're reading a document, your eye will automatically look for the first letter of the first word of that line; however with the right-side of the document, your eye is much more flexible (since you can't be sure when that line will 'end') with texts and objects on the right side of the page. You can try Plus, the scroll bar is on the right, so you're looking over there anyway...
2. Match the look & feel Match the background color of the unit to the background of your page, and match the font face, style, and color to the other text on your page. The more seamless your page looks, the better your units will perform.
3. Seamless placement An a unit right above or right below your content (like the text of a blog post) works great. You can also try experimenting with placing an eMiniMall between the title and text of a post, as well as on the right side (as mentioned above).
These are just a few general-purpose tips, but ones that can be very helpful...at least I hope they can be!

Aww..Thanks for the compliment. Still learning though (and cracking my head).
1) On a page like this, you can have the RPU at the bottom (I see that you are already up and running with it) An RPU right after an eMinimall? Good idea! I shall follow your suggestion. I've only tried experimenting placing an RPU at the bottom of a page without and eMinimall right before it, like on this page, and also placing a Shopcloud$ right after an eMinmall like on this blog post.
(I'm off to get beaten up by marketing for suggesting that you move the Chitika referral banner ) I guess you're right. I shall replace that banner with other meaningful / related ads. And this means removing the Chitika referral banner. Hope you didn't get 'beaten up' by your marketing guys!
