My Success with RPU
« on: October 05, 2006, 01:18:07 PM »

I have seen my overall advertising revenue increase by 15% after using Chitika's related product unit (RPU). It was actually pretty easy to implement, besides a bit of fussing around with the CSS. And I am not surprised because it's a very simple effective concept. Putting related products after a post about products, its a no brainer. See an example in this article http://www.i4u.com/article6577.html.

 Nice implementation i4u!

My site is much uglier, but ugly seems to produce the highest CTR sometimes.  I need to work on the css obviously.

Goody.

Two questions:
1) Does RPU eat revenue from other places ?
2) Why was I not invited to try this out ? Someone at Chitika should look at my stats and wake up.

I've had great initial success with RPU as well. So far as I can see my overall page CTR (accounting for all the ads on the page per page view) has gone up. Therefore these ads do not seem to be taking away from revenue in other ad positions.

The CPC is a little bit lower, however the CTR is great and makes up for the slightly lower CPC.

my rpu performance has been reasonable. It's definately decreased the CTR on other ads on the page - but so far (2 days in) the earnings it's brought have been more than the decrease in other ads.

My only concern is that with so many ad units available it's getting to the point where pages can look quite cluttered.

That's true. The CPC at this time is lower than the eMiniMalls (as it comes from a different inventory pool).  However, as you can imagine, we are working on a couple of things to improve this (soon!).

As a side effect of this: If you do happen to have a 468x180 at the bottom of your content, you should put the RPU "under" it .. that way you are giving the user to chance at the higher paying eMiniMalls and then if he passes those over, he moves to the next logical thing in "the storyline" (in tflight lingo).

Checking the source of the I4U page linked below, I noticed that the RPU is rendered server side as HTML by I4U instead of by the client side browser using javascript. Is this type of implementation something that will be generally available to all publishers?

I am running RPUs since very early, when only a RSS feed was avaible. On some of my other blogs I use the new JS based code provided by Chitika. For example on PVP4U.com: http://www.pvp4u.com/archives/2006/10/toshiba_dvd_and.html

Still playing with the layout...

I have been using RPUs for about a week on my BlackBerry Blog and am having pretty good success so far.  They account for about 38% of my total Chitika revenue.

I just need to figure out a more prominent spot to put them in to see I can get them to perform any better.

bloggerpreneur,
Quick fix:  I would suggest shifting the RPU's above the comments section (and below the "Related  Articles").  This is specially significant if there are no comments. In that case, the "storyline" is considered over and nobody is going to even look at the RPU below the comment box.

Little more painful: Customize the CSS to look more like your content (e.g. your links are not bolded and the RPUs are).

Who would have known my legacy would have been "the storyline post". Smiley

RPU under a 468x180. Nice tips. Will try it out. Thanks EngineeringGrunt !

Wow! Wow! Wow!

It's only the first day that I had RPU's installed (actually only 1/2 day until the results were in), and they made 3x as much as all my other Chitika ads combined. And I have a lot of them!

CTR better then my best performing Adsense unit, CPC the same as my average Adsense CPC...

And overall result just incredible. Yesterdays earnings were something like 20x bigger then the average  Chitika days earnings during past few months. Granted, traffic also was about 5x more then usual due to some very popular posts.

Still, it's good to have the biggest ever earnings day on Chitika Smiley And I've had some days that were 5x bigger then today, traffic wise (when I got Dugg or got some other very high traffic referral)  so it must be RPU related.

Oh well, this is one exceptional day. And now for the week of adjusting (downwards) expectations.
