iOS 4 Now Powering 50% of iPhone Traffic
Apple's latest mobile operating system, iOS 4, is already accounting for one-half of all iPhone web traffic, according to online advertising network Chitika. In looking at over 9 million iPhone impressions across its advertising network, Chitika found that iOS 4 edged iOS 3 by eight-tenths of a percent to be the dominant OS only one month after being officially released.

Looking more deeply, iOS 4.0 - the version released on June 21st - is the dominant single version at 44.5%. Version 4.0.1 - the latest official release for the iPhone 3G, 3GS and iPhone 4 - clocks in at only 5% of the market, not surprising given that it was released less than a week ago.

Of the iOS 3.x variants, the most represented is 3.1.3 at 29.8%. As it is the highest released version of iOS 3.x for iPhones and iPod Touches, this result should be expected. The next step down, 3.1.2 (released in October, 2009) commands 14% of all iPhone traffic.
