While almost any company outing presents a great way to bond with coworkers, Chitika’s spring outing provided the added benefit of helping out our local community on top of the usual drinks and fun.
Prior to hitting up Pinz in Milford for lunch, drinks, bowling, laser tag, and nostalgic video game competitions, our Westborough HQ employees teamed up with United Way to clean and maintain the Assabet River Rail Trail in central Massachusetts.
The trail, which runs through nearby Marlborough, Hudson, Stow, Maynard, and Acton, acts as a scenic walking and bike path for area residents built upon old rail lines that have gone out of use. Most Chitikans took full advantage of the warming spring weather while scouring the sides of the trail to dispose of any litter. A second group carefully removed area student artwork in adjacent display kiosks so trail workers can put up the latest batch for the spring season. Benches on the sides of the trail, which had been dedicated by donors to the trail project, had worn plaques in many cases — so a third group of our more handy employees went through and replaced the worn plaques with brand new ones.
Obviously, walking the trail was one of the added benefits of the project. We were out on one of the first nice days of the spring, making it a terrific prelude to the more traditional portion of our outing.
Our work with the United Way is just the latest in Chitika’s ongoing series of community service projects. Earlier this year, a group of Chitikans helped Habitat for Humanity build a house for a two Worcester-area families, and we plan on doing even more for our community as the year rolls on.
