Web out, Mobile in: 3 Reasons why you should be worried

We have seen it happen not too long ago, people stopped watching their favorite television shows during its regular time, and started viewing them right from their computer. Now, regular web browsing has been replaced by mobile browsing because just like streaming your favorite shows online, it’s easier to view the web right from your phone. We already know that traffic to your websites via cell phone has already started to surpass web traffic, and here are 3 more reasons why you should not continue to let mobile traffic pass you by.

1. Traffic is has shifted to mobile. I said it above and I’m saying it again, your web traffic has been replaced by mobile, and mobile is NOT the same as web, it needs to be treated differently.

2. Advertisers love mobile. You might love your web traffic, but advertisers love your mobile traffic. Advertisers love the fact that your mobile visitors are more engaged and hence, are willing to pay more. And that is what makes this the most important reason.

3. You don’t need to create a mobile version of your site. You are probably waiting for the mobile version of your site before you can start to think about your mobile traffic, but thousands of Chitika publishers are already monetizing their mobile traffic without having had to make any changes to their website.

5 Things We’ve Learned from Chitika Research

As we approach the end of the year, we can surely say that 2010 has been a great year for Chitika’s Research Department. They began in July 2009, and have been very busy analyzing data from Chitika’s publisher network to come up with the latest trends ever since. How do they do it? By taking a TON of data gathered in Chitika’s network of over 100,000 websites, then analyzing the heck out of it in their crazy labs like mad scientists!.. No probably not, but lots of data crunching for sure.  “[We] can spot trends ranging from operating systems to ad click rates.” Our studies, headed by research director, Daniel Ruby, have been recognized and featured (and sometimes challenged) in some pretty cool places like SearchEngineLand, Mashable & TechCrunch.

With so many studies published, let’s sit back and reflect on: the top 5 things Chitika’s Research Department has taught us in the past 18 months:

1.) Optimize For Bing. Now that Bing controls approximately one quarter of the search market, it only makes sense that we think outside the Google = SEO mantra. The end result of ignoring this could be a loss of quite a bit of money for you, especially considering the revenue potential that’s effortlessly tipped in Bings favor.

2.) You Need a Mobile Solution. Much like the Furby, the mobile traffic wave is coming fast, and apparently before it’s time… because it would appear we are just not ready, with only 4% of domains actually ready for mobile traffic, it’s shockingly true. “Without a targeted site or call-to-action targeted to mobile devices (such as Chitika’s mobile ad unit, which targets mobile traffic on non-mobile sites), mobile traffic is nearly impossible to monetize”, says Research’s Dan Ruby.

3.) Android Is Your Friend. By carefully taking the feelings of iPhone users into consideration, we concluded that iPhone users are just far less valuable than Andriod users no matter what Apple does.. for now anyways 😉

4.) Go Local. The internet isn’t just for finding out what’s going on hundreds or thousands of miles away any longer. Now you can find out what’s going on right outside your door at the pizza place right across your street, with what local advertising has to offer. In fact, you could most likely get a view of your street as if you were right on the road, without having to get up and look out your window. With this high demand for local information, we found that local searches click on ads 38% more often. Put that in a blender with mobile and you get a staggering 64% more often!

5.) Get That #1 Search Ranking, STAT. Unfortunately being second best just doesn’t hold a light to being the #1 search listing in Google. Because the difference in CTR being #1 is double the traffic when compared to the second spot. Personally, my eye always goes first, to the title, then the link. If I don’t see at least 3 key phrases I am looking for, I move on. And I have definitely gone to page 2, even 3 before finding what I really wanted. How do you determine which listing is the one you click on?

NEW: Chitika | LAX – Local Ad Exchange

Local advertising is definitely a sector we are extremely excited to be getting into. We have partnered with some guru’s in the local ad industry, like YellowBook and CityGrid Media. The potential benefits of Chitika | LAX are going to be plentiful for Chitika publishers as this will bring a great new way to monetize local traffic that was, until now, ignored. LAX will work in two different ways, there will be a Chitika | LAX for Desktop & Chitika | LAX for Mobile. Your local search traffic on a standard home computer will see an ad featuring a map of local businesses matching what they’re looking (searching) for near them, as well as local listings.

For your mobile search traffic, LAX is the first solution that will automatically detect the mobile users and adjust their experience accordingly. One touch (touch to call) will allow potential customers to call local advertisers from the mobile ad.

Chitika | LAX will be available soon!! Click here to learn more about Chitika | LAX

New Changes in Your Chitika Reports

In addition to the current upgrades in the Chitika ad service, we have begun incorporating ads which pay per impression (CPM/CPI) along with pay per click (CPC) for your websites.

What is changing in my reports? With the addition of these CPM ads, we will no longer be reporting on clicks. Because of this, the CPC and CTR values in your reports now become quite irrelevant and alter your focus from your actual revenue earnings. We feel that removing the CPC and CTR fields, will help you see the most important aspect of your earnings: your revenue.

How should I read my reports? Focusing on your impressions and the revenue earnings for those impressions will show you the CPM rate you are getting. Previously, your CPC and CTR stats did not include stats from CPM ads on your site. So as of today, your reports will now give you a breakdown of Impressions, CPM and Revenue.

Welcoming Mega Unit Jr. to the ad Family

The Chitika Mega Unit, launched exactly one year ago, due to a custom request from a publisher, and went on to do very well for other publishers. The Mega unit is a non-conventional ad size, and Chitika is the only company that offers it. Because the ad unit did so well for a test group of publishers, we made it available for all. The Mega Unit comes in sizes: 550×250, 500×250. We realize that some sites do not have the space to place such a wide ad unit, but you still would like to receive the benefits from it. So, now available is the Mega Unit Jr., size: 468×250. This will give you the large, successful size of the Mega Unit for those who do not have a 550 or 500 pixel space. To try this size out, simply edit the ad code on your page, or generate a new ad in your code panel.  This all began with feedback from you, please let us know what you’d like to see!
